GO FOR THE GOLD: YOUTH ARCHERY GAMES Since the 2016 Rio Olympics, we’ve seen some extra motivation for kids and adults wanting to practice their shooting and archery techniques. Ginny Thrasher and Kim Rhode were a big enough inspiration for anyone, hunter or not, to try out their skills in shooting or archery. What better way to teach well-rounded sportsmanship while working on accuracy, than a fun archery game.

BEING AN ETHICAL HUNTER Most people want to be good; and based on many conversations, most hunters—everyone I’ve spoken with—want to be honorable and ethical. For them, honoring the animal, the land, the hunting culture and themselves are sources of pride and self-respect. But to be an honorable hunter, wanting is not enough. Doing good, doing what’s right, is the result of several complex thoughts, actions and character traits. What does it take for a hunter to be honorable?

A shotgun can be great for beginner shooters, while a rifle is a great option for a more experienced shooter looking for a challenge. Squirrel hunting is a great way to practice better shooting accuracy, either shotgun or rifle, while in the off-season.

JUST FOR KIDS: PREDATOR HUNTING SAFETY Do you know the first thing to do before you go predator hunting and what to do when you return from your hunt? It’s important to take extra caution when hunting with kids, but even more so while hunting predators in a group. Shooting in groups requires specific ways to sit to ensure everyone is safe and the shooter has a clear view. You’ll want to protect yourself and others from diseases that animals can carry. Hunter orange may not be required, but should you wear it?

JUST FOR KIDS: PRE-HUNT TURKEY SCOUTING Before you go out turkey hunting this season, it’s important to scout a great location to be at ahead of time. You may know to look for tracks and scratchings, but what about the perfect sitting position? When hunting with kids, and let’s be honest adults too, we don’t want to hurry up to sit down and be quiet, only to realize you’re sitting on an ant mound.

JUST FOR KIDS: TREE STAND SAFETY What is the number one cause of injury or death while hunting? If you said firearm accidents, think again. One in three people will fall while in a tree stand, which is a statistic all too frightening to avoid. This may be our “Just for Kids” segment, but this is a lesson all hunters should follow 100% of the time.

JUST FOR KIDS: TIPS FOR HUNTING IN THE BLIND Let’s face it. We all think it—sometimes, hunting should really be called “waiting.” Staking out in a blind is an art form. It requires stealth, stillness, and quiet—neither of which are qualities that kids are renowned for. But that doesn’t mean you should skip family hunting time in the blind.

THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUTH RIFLE SEASON With more and more media attention on our Second Amendment rights, gun owners and hunters alike are having to take action to help educate and nurture the love of the outdoors in our youth. When I was growing up there wasn’t a youth deer season, but now with numbers declining and less kids getting outdoors, changes are being made.
