Small game hunting is a great recreational activity that teaches valuable woodcraft and shooting skills. Though this hunting sport is on the decline, there are still plenty of small game to hunt such as rabbits, squirrel, muskrat, prairie dog, raccoon, pigeons and doves. This is a great sport for your family dog to get involved with as well!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FIREARM FOR SQUIRREL HUNTING There is always a debate on whether to take a shotgun or a rifle. A shotgun can be great for beginner shooters, while a rifle is a great option for a more experienced shooter looking for a challenge. Squirrel hunting is a great way to practice better shooting accuracy, either shotgun or rifle, while in the off-season.

RAMPANT RABBITS Once considered a species hunted mostly by poor families for a quick and easy meal, or as the primary reason a group of family members or friends would get together to hunt, today there’s another reason many hunters pursue rabbits. Rabbits are destructive to the small trees and young plants of many landowners and farmers, and in the right habitat, rabbits are plentiful and can possibly reach pest status.

TRAPPING MUSKRATS FOR BEGINNERS I caught my first muskrat at the age of eight and by the time I was eleven, I had a small trap line (a route along which a line of traps is set) consisting of a dozen muskrat traps on the lake in my back yard. Trapping muskrats isn’t difficult, and they are an excellent furbearer for anyone to begin learning to harvest.

RUNNING RABBITS: CHASING BUNNIES WITH BEAGLES IS A THRILL FOR HUNTERS OF ALL AGES Hunting hares and rabbits with hounds dates back to the first century A.D., when fashionable Greeks headed to the field accompanied by their “coursing dogs.” Today, the most common breed of dog used to pursue rabbits is the beagle, which was bred in England to have the scenting abilities of larger hounds with a small stature that allows them to weave through heavy cover where rabbits are commonly found.

SQUIRRELS: SMALL GAME, BIG FUN Squirrels, once the most hunted species in America, are now often the most abundant small game species in many states. Hunters seeking something to hunt after the deer and other big game hunting seasons close, will discover that squirrel seasons often remain open into late February. Many states also permit hunters to take a daily bag limit of six or more squirrels.
