BARTHOLOW BROTHERS AIM TO IMPROVE SHOOTING SPORTS The Bartholow brothers credit a local trap club’s youth shooting league for igniting a passion that has taken them to the heights of competitive trapshooting, so much so they dedicate time and to teaching others. The Bartholow brothers, both members of Browning’s pro staff, are Foster, 28, and Matt, 26, who are in their 15th year of competitive shooting so you can do the math to determine their age when Foster, then in high school, and Matt, in middle school, found a flyer advertising a five-week trapshooting league that would teach the fundamentals of shooting and safety.

SHOTGUN RANGE SAFETY Shotgun sports are exciting and they offer a great opportunity to improve your shooting skills, but safety is top priority. The number of kids and young adults competing in shotgun sports has increased dramatically over the last decade. Since my own days as a college shooter in the early 2000s, the number of universities fielding teams at the annual ACUI Championship in San Antonio has more than tripled, and the state of Minnesota fielded over six thousand shooters for last year’s youth shotgun championship.

5 ESSENTIAL TRICKS FOR KEEPING A WELL-PACKED RANGE BAG Shooting is an equipment-intensive activity, which means you’ll have a lot of gear that needs to move to and from the range. To help simplify the chore of organizing and transporting your shooting gear, it’s a good idea to have a bag that contains all the items you’ll need for a typical day on the range. These “range bags” make a shooter’s life much easier.

HOW TO CHECK FOR CROSS-EYE DOMINANCE Although both of your eyes work together when pointing a shotgun or looking down the sights of a pistol, all shooters have one dominant eye that the brain uses to aim with. This dominant eye should always be the one that is aligned with the bead on your firearm – otherwise expect problems with being on target when you shoot.

PLINKING The term refers to informal target shooting, often at off-beat targets such as cans and bottles. But the term plinking basically comes, as one might imagine, from the sound of a small caliber bullet hitting a tin can— “PLINK!” Various calibers have been used, but the old standby for all-around plinking fun is the .22 caliber rimfire with air guns also thrown into the mix.
