Beating the wind

A big buck navigates his world using all of his senses, but scent is the most important. Deer not only detect danger through air currents, they communicate with other deer using a complex array of odors that mark territorial boundaries, display dominance and attract potential mates. Savvy deer hunters learned years ago that using the right scents—and the right cover scents—will help you bring deer in close and blend in during the process.

Beating the Wind

The right combination of attractant scents and cover scents will help you fool a deer’s greatest weapon—his nose.

Brad Fitzpatrick

A big buck navigates his world using all of his senses, but scent is the most important. Deer not only detect danger through air currents, they communicate with other deer using a complex array of odors that mark territorial boundaries, display dominance and attract potential mates. Savvy deer hunters learned years ago that using the right scents—and the right cover scents—will help you bring deer in close and blend in during the process.

Wildlife Research Center is the leader in scent and scent elimination products for deer hunters, and their new lineup of products is specifically engineered to bring deer closer. The company is now offering a new line of Synthetic Lures that were designed to send the right message to deer, and they have a number of new products in their arsenal that act as powerful attractants for rutting bucks. Scientists have unraveled the cocktail of odors that are most attractive to deer, and using that data, Wildlife Research has created attractants with Scent Reflex Technology. These new formulas have been years in development, and they have the potential to increase response when deer come in contact with the odor. This, in turn, elicits a powerful response that deer can’t ignore. Offerings include Ultimate Buck Lure, Estrus Gold, Synthetic Estrus and Hot Scrape, all bolstered with the new Scent Reflex Technology.

These attractants are an important tool to hunters, and using Wildlife Research’s new scents ups the odds that you’ll draw a big buck out of hiding. During the rut, mature white-tailed bucks scour their range in search of hot does and rivals, and they rely on their noses to lead the way. If they encounter a scent that they recognize as that of another deer, the response can be dramatic and rapid.

But simply offering up attractants isn’t enough. Rutting bucks are focused on breeding, but the biggest deer won’t show themselves unless they know they are safe. That means you’ll need to avoid detection. Until a few years ago, this meant you had to play the prevailing wind and thermals, but as any deer hunter can tell you, wind direction changes and even the best stands won’t produce if a deer detects your human odor. That means you need to mask that scent using a product like Scent Killer Spray—Super Charged, which fights human odors at the molecular level for an astounding 99% reduction in scent. Keeping a bottle of Scent Killer on hand allows you to effectively hide right under the deers’ nose, and that is a critical step toward bringing a buck to your stand in daylight hours. If you’re really serious about eliminating odor, the process begins well before you step into the woods. Liquid detergents are often infused with a number of powerful perfumes that may smell good to other humans but act as warning flags to any deer that passes by. To that end, it’s a good idea to wash your hunting clothes with Scent Killer Autumn Formula Clothing Wash, which will help keep your clothes from blowing your hunt.

Scent dispersion is also an important factor in success. No attractant can work unless the scent reaches the deer’s nose, so you must work to ensure that you are getting the most from every application. To aid in this, use scent wicks like Wildlife Research Quik-Wiks, which use non-reactive felt wicks that can be dipped in your attractant scent and hung from tree branches to maximize wind currents. In addition, these wicks help reduce waste and allow you to get the most use from every bottle of attractant you purchase.
